International Solar Alliance

Provides a platform for cooperation among solar resource-rich countries to address their special energy needs.

The International Solar Alliance (ISA) is conceived as a coalition of solar resource-rich countries to address their special energy needs and was launched on 30 November 2015 by India and France to implement the Paris Agreement. To date, the following states have signed the ISA Framework Agreement, including 11 EU countries.

Towards 1000

The ISA strategy, Towards 1000, aims to mobilise 1000 billion USD of investments in solar energy solutions by 2030 while delivering energy access to 1000 million people using clean energy solutions and resulting in the installation of 1000 gigawatt (GW) of solar energy capacity.

This would help mitigate global solar emissions to the tune of 1000 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

Joint declaration ISA – EU

With the signature of a joint declaration for cooperation on 11 December 2018, the European Union is a partner organisation to the ISA. The following 11 EU countries have signed and/or ratified the ISA framework: Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Spain and Sweden.

The EU supports ISA with concrete actions, such as the development of the ISA’s collaborative and knowledge platform and other programmes in favour of the development of solar energy globally.
