The Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI), an initiative established under the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, measures a building’s ability to use smart technologies to enhance its energy efficiency and respond to signals from its environment. Currently, the SRI is being tested extensively across the EU.
Portugal officially launched its SRI test phase in November 2024, bringing the total number of EU countries with national trials underway to 15, thus joining Austria, Belgium (Flanders), Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, Slovenia, and Spain.
These trial programs are addressing implementation challenges, gathering feedback from evaluators and building owners, and examining the SRI’s interaction with other instruments, such as Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs). This progress is supported by EU-funded projects under the LIFE Clean Energy Transition, including SMART2, EasySRI, SRI2MARKET, and SRI-ENACT. These projects are helping to deliver assessment tools, improve and standardise methodologies, train evaluators, and lead extensive tests across EU building stocks, preparing for potential broader adoption of the SRI in the future.
A report on the testing phases is scheduled to be published in 2026, and findings will contribute to recommendations on the future implementation of the SRI in the context of the EU’s overarching sustainable energy goals for buildings.
The SRI contributes to improved energy efficiency, enhances overall energy performance, increases the building's capacity to adapt operations to occupant needs, and enables better responsiveness to grid signals. The SRI strengthens buildings' capacity to support the EU’s transition towards clean energy and climate neutrality.
