Executive Vice-President Timmermans visits Silesia to discuss just transition and new economic opportunities

On Monday, Executive Vice-President Timmermans will be in Silesia in Poland to meet with local leaders, representatives of coal regions and cities with carbon-intensive industries, civil society and citizens.

In the morning, the Executive Vice-President will visit the Silesian Park of Science in Chorzów, and meet with Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Śląskie Voivodship. Later, he will participate in a roundtable discussion with Marshals and deputy Marshals of different coal regions and cities across the country, including Katowice, Ruda Śląska and Wałbrzych. This meeting will be followed by a press conference at 11, which can be followed live on Europe by Satellite (Ebs). He will also hold a dialogue with Polish trade unions about the just transition in coal regions.

Executive Vice-President Timmermans will also meet with youth and students in the afternoon, as part of the Silesian Festival of Science in Katowice. A recording of this dialogue will also be available on Ebs after the visit. His trip will end with a visit to Hewalex, a leading solar collector and heat-pump manufacturer in the country.

The Silesia region is part of the five Polish regions selected to receive funding via the Just Transition Fund to support their transition to a climate-neutral economy. In Poland, the Commission will provide €3.85 billion to these regions. The corresponding Territorial Just Transition Plans are in final stages of preparation.
