To mark the first anniversary of the joint EU-US Task Force on Energy Security established by President von der Leyen and President Biden, the European Commission and the United States have published a report that presents the Task Force’s accomplishments and outlines its next steps.
In broad terms the EU-US Task Force aims primarily to reduce the EU’s reliance on Russian energy, diversifying its natural gas supplies in alignment with the climate objectives, and reducing EU countries’ overall demand for natural gas, among other measures.
In more specific terms, the report confirms that in 2022 the United States exported 56 billion cubic meters (bcm) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the EU - up from 22 bcm in 2021. This exceeds the 2022 target of additional 15 bcm LNG agreed by President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Joe Biden, as announced in their Joint Statement of 25 March 2022. As a result, the EU was the largest destination for US liquefied natural gas exports last year, accounting for more than 52% of supplies.
As reiterated in the joint statement on 10 March 2023, both presidents declared that the US and the EU will continue to work together to advance energy security and sustainability in Europe by diversifying sources, lowering energy consumption, and reducing Europe's dependence on fossil fuels.
