As of today, Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson is in Valletta, Malta, to attend the first meeting of the MED9 Energy Ministers. Energy Ministers from Croatia, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain will participate in the gathering hosted by Malta’s Minister for the Environment, Energy and Enterprise, Miriam Dalli.
Tomorrow (18 May), the ministers will engage in roundtable discussions on delivering the EU’s ambitious targets on renewable energy, and the role of the Mediterranean as a green energy centre.
The MED9 is an alliance of Southern European Union countries that was informally established in 2013 to create coordination on issues of common interest within the EU, including the green transition and secure energy supplies. In December last year, President von der Leyen attended the Summit of Southern European Union countries in Alicante, Spain, where discussions on the clean energy transition, and hydrogen in particular, featured prominently.
At the end of the meeting on Thursday, Commissioner Simson will participate in a press conference with the Energy Ministers, scheduled for around 14.00 CET.
