Commission hosts first General Assembly of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors

Participation of Kadri Simson, European Commissioner, in the 1st General Assembly of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)

Today and tomorrow, the Commission is hosting the first General Assembly of the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Brussels. Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, and Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Iliana Ivanova, are participating in the event today and delivering speeches.

The event will gather the 278 Members of the Alliance from the Member States who have applied so far, spanning industry, research organisations, start-ups, training centers and academia and civil society organisations. They will discuss the way forward to support concrete projects and establish the Governing Board and technical working groups. This is the first official meeting of this Alliance, which was launched by the Commission in February.

The key objective of the SMRs Industrial Alliance is to accelerate the development, demonstration and deployment of SMRs in Europe by the early 2030s. The aim is to reinforce the nuclear supply chain in Europe by leveraging its manufacturing and innovation capacity and strengthening EU cooperation.

In combination with other sources of clean energy, SMRs will play a role in achieving the clean energy transition and boosting energy security in Europe in the coming years by helping to decarbonise electricity generation and industry, produce low-carbon hydrogen and provide heat to industrial and urban districts.
