EU Building Stock Observatory gets a major upgrade

The EU Building Stock Observatory (BSO) has undergone its most substantial upgrade since its inception in 2016, with the new version launched last month by the Commission. It offers an improved user interface and better data availability.

With this update, the BSO, as an open-source web platform on the energy performance of buildings in the EU, has the potential to become the central data hub for Europe’s building stock.

What’s new?

The main improvements include an increased dataset with additional indicators and a higher level of detail and a new user interface that offers advanced user experience. Thanks to these changes, users can also customise data visualisations and compare different sets of data, making more combinations between available indicators possible.

Information about occupancy, tenancy type and social aspects related to energy poverty are some examples of what is included in this expanded data set.

How to use it

The BSO is structured in 2 main parts, each meeting different user needs: a database and factsheets.

The database contains the whole set of collected indicators. It is targeted at skilled data users and offers datasets per topic, year, country or for the EU as a whole. Data can be visualised, and in some cases downloaded, in multiple formats such as tables, graphs or maps.

The country factsheets provide a graphical overview of building stock, energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, social aspects and energy use in households. Factsheets can be downloaded per EU country or for the EU as a whole.

A user manual is available on the BSO website providing guidance on how to use the tool and access the data.

In addition, a dedicated webinar on how to use the platform and what can be found in it will be organised on 30 April 2024 on the Leonardo Energy platform. The webinar will include a Q&A session open to anyone attending the webinar.

Stay up to date with the platform’s latest news and developments by signing up to the BSO newsletter and follow #EUBSO on twitter/X.
