European Hydrogen Bank
Hydrogen can be used to generate electricity, run vehicles, and even power heavy industry. Powered by renewable energy, it can help the EU towards its clean energy transition. The European Hydrogen Bank is a financial instrument, launched by the Commission in 2022 to support European and global production of renewable hydrogen.
Nuclear power and SMRs in the EU
More than a fifth of the EU’s electricity is generated by nuclear power. Nuclear technology is constantly evolving, especially in the field of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which could offer a low-carbon alternative to fossil-fuelled power plants and complement renewable energy production.
Global Methane Pledge
Together with the U.S., the EU launched the Global Methane Pledge at COP26 in 2021.
Its more than 150 participating countries agree to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30% from 2020 levels by 2030.
Global targets for energy transition
Unless further action is taken, the world is not on track to meet the Paris Agreement goal and to limit global warming to 1.5°C. President von der Leyen, accompanied by over 130 world leaders, therefore launched the Global Pledge on Renewables and Energy Efficiency at COP28 in December 2023.
Biomethane
Biomethane can be made of organic waste like manure, food scraps or damaged crops.
To decarbonise our economy, the EU has set an ambitious, but realistic, target to produce 35 billion m2 of biomethane per year by 2030.
Heat pumps
Heat pumps are an efficient, sustainable and increasingly affordable heating solution that will help Europe in its transition towards a cleaner, greener future.
The Commission's Heat Pump Action Plan will accelerate their roll-out across the EU.
Coal regions exchangeEU programme
The EU’s exchange programme for coal, lignite, peat, and oil shale (coal+) regions in transition (2022-2023) was part of the EU's initiative for coal regions in transition, assisting coal+ regions to achieve a low-carbon economy and supporting them to deliver the transition in a just and fair way.
EU Energy Platform
Launched by the Commission in 2022 to help address the energy crisis, exacerbated by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the EU Energy Platform continues to play a key role in diversifying supplies, increasing efficiency of infrastructure use, and negotiating with reliable international partners.
