Energy

Central Asia

EU cooperation with Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Energy is an important area of cooperation between the EU and Central Asia. The region has significant reserves of oil, gas, uranium and critical energy transition minerals, as well as a major potential to develop renewable energy sources.

Our energy cooperation aims to support Central Asia’s clean energy transition through technical assistance and support to investments, based on the EU Strategy for Central Asia (2019) and the Joint Roadmap for deepening ties between the EU and Central Asia (2023).

Cooperation is also established through energy-related bilateral Memoranda of Understanding with Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, and regional projects such as Sustainable Energy Connectivity in Central Asia (SECCA) as part of the Global Gateway/Team Europe Initiative on Water, Energy and Climate Change in Central Asia that incorporates the joint efforts of the EU, European Investment Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and EU countries, including France, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Slovakia and Romania.

Furthermore, all 5 Central Asian countries have joined the EU/U.S.-led Global Methane Pledge to reduce methane emissions worldwide by at least 30 % by 2030. In addition,  Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan also joined the EU/UAE-led Global Pledge on renewables and energy efficiency to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency gains worldwide by 2030 that was launched at the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai (COP28).
