Today, on 22 May, Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, is in the Netherlands for a country visit which falls one year after the Commission presented the REPowerEU Plan, to cut our dependence on Russian fossil fuels and accelerate the green transition, while supporting Ukraine.

Last year, for the first time, more electricity was generated from wind and solar than gas in the EU, with 41 gigawatts (GW) of new installed capacity in solar energy and a 15 GW wind capacity increase. In 2022, 39% of electricity in the EU was generated from renewable sources.

The Commissioner will see examples of the fast technological progress in renewable energy manufacturing in the Netherlands. She attended the opening of the SoLarge factory in Weert, a pioneering producer of sustainable, 100% recyclable lightweight solar panels. She participated on-site in a panel discussion with the Dutch Minister for Climate and Energy, Rob Jetten, and representatives of industry and academia. This afternoon, Commissioner Simson will visit the Sif factory in Roermond, a pioneer in the production of sustainable foundations for offshore wind installations.

Before their bilateral meeting later in the afternoon, the Commissioner will hold a joint press statement with Minister Jetten at around 12:30.
