In a meeting of the Gas Coordination Group held this morning, the Commission and EU countries discussed the EU’s security of gas supply in view of the ongoing disruption in the Middle East.
The Commission referred to the letter sent by Commissioner Jørgensen inviting EU countries to make use of the flexibility provisions in the Gas Storage Regulation and to consider reducing their filling target to 80% as early as possible in the filling season, to provide certainty and reassurance to market participants.
The Group discussed with ENTSOG several scenarios for winter preparedness. During the exchange, the Commission and EU countries confirmed that no risks to security of supply are currently observed. Even though gas storage levels are below the average of the last 5 years, they remain stable and early storage injection will allow the EU to benefit from a longer injection period, and EU countries to adapt to market circumstances mitigating pressure on prices and avoiding end-of-summer rush to refill storages.
The Commission is coordinating with international partners, particularly in Asia, in order to share its experience and to coordinate potential actions.
The Commission will continue to monitor and reassess the situation with regards to security of gas supply, in coordination with EU countries.
