Tomorrow, Tuesday 13 December, Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will represent the Commission at the Extraordinary Energy Council in Brussels.
EU energy ministers will aim to agree on a Council Regulation establishing a Market Correction Mechanism to limit excessive gas price spikes. The proposal was tabled by the Commission on 22 November to reduce the volatility on European gas markets while safeguarding the security of gas supply.
Complementing already agreed measures to ensure storage filling, reduce gas demand and strengthen security of supply through diversification, this temporary measure would help protect EU businesses and citizens from episodes of excessively high gas prices in the EU.
Ahead of the meeting with the Ministers, Commissioner Simson said
“The EU has done a lot to fight this energy crisis in unity by reducing gas demand, diversifying supplies and storing gas together. But we are not out of the woods yet. What we need for next year is a tool to specifically protect our people and businesses from extreme price hikes, while ensuring security of gas supply. I hope that the Member States can find broad support for an agreement soon, based on the Commission’s proposal.”
The morning doorsteps and the closing press conference with Commissioner Simson alongside the Czech Presidency of the Council will be livestreamed.
