Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, will represent the Commission at the Energy Council taking place on 28 March in Brussels.

The Commissioner will present the Commission’s recent proposal to reform the EU’s electricity market design, which aims to accelerate a surge in renewables, better protect consumers from energy prices spikes and make the EU’s industry clean and more competitive. Building on the lessons learnt from last year, she will also discuss with the Ministers winter preparedness for 2023-2024.

At the meeting, EU energy ministers will aim to reach a general approach on the Commission’s proposals to decarbonise the EU’s gas market and promote hydrogen put forward in December 2021, to help achieve its goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 on the way to climate neutrality by 2050. The ministers will also strive to reach an agreement on the prolongation of the EU’s framework to reduce gas demand in a coordinated way, as recently proposed by the Commission to ensure security of supply and keep prices stable next winter.

Furthermore, the Commissioner and the ministers will be informed about the energy situation in Ukraine, as Ukrainian Energy Minister German Galushchenko will attend the ministerial lunch.

At the end of the Council, the Commissioner will participate in a press conference alongside the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU, which is expected to take place at around 17.30 (CEST). You can follow it live on EbS.
