On Monday 19 December, Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson will represent the Commission at the Energy Council in Brussels.

The EU energy ministers will aim to conclude talks on a Market Correction Mechanism, which the Commission put forward last month to limit episodes of excessive gas price spikes. They are then expected to formally approve two emergency proposals put forward by the Commission over the past months to fight high energy prices and ensure security of supply. First is the Emergency Regulation proposed on 18 October to introduce joint gas purchasing, new measures on transparent infrastructure use and solidarity between Member States, and a new complementary benchmark for LNG. Second is the Emergency Regulation on the simplification of permitting procedures to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy proposed by the Commission on 9 November.

At the Council on Monday, the EU energy ministers will also seek to agree a General Approach on a Regulation to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector, proposed by the Commission last December as part of the second set of the 'Fit for 55' package. They will also seek to reach a General Approach on the elements of the REPowerEU proposal aimed at amending EU legislation on renewable energy, on top of the Fit for 55 proposals from July 2021. The Ministers will further discuss among others the progress achieved so far in the negotiations on the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Package, recent developments in external energy relations, as well as the work programme of the incoming Swedish Presidency of the Council. The Commission will also inform the Ministers of its ongoing work on the reform of the electricity market design.

The morning press doorsteps and the closing press conference with Commissioner Simson and the Czech Presidency of the Council will be livestreamed on EuropebySatellite.
