Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, will be in Paris tomorrow to attend the 8th Annual Global Conference on Energy Efficiency by the International Energy Agency. The Conference brings together policymakers and industry representatives from across the globe to discuss policy action with a view to prompt faster progress on energy efficiency, a key element to tackle both the energy and the climate crises.
The Commissioner will participate in a panel discussion on the lessons learnt from the crisis prompted by Russia’s war in Ukraine, which caused disruptions in global energy markets and high prices for consumers and industries worldwide in 2022. The Commissioner will reflect on the policy response to the crisis and how to increase the market’s resilience to future shocks.
Energy efficiency is a key pillar of the European Green Deal as well as of the REPowerEU plan, as energy savings can reduce bills as well as greenhouse gas emissions. EU co-legislators recently agreed on stronger rules on energy efficiency, putting the EU on a path to reach climate neutrality by 2050.
As recently announced by President von der Leyen, the EU is also working on an international initiative to set global targets for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
