Energy

METIS is a mathematical model providing analysis of the European energy system for electricity, gas and heat. It simulates the operation of energy systems and markets on an hourly basis over a year, while also factoring in uncertainties like weather variations. For example, it can analyse the hour-by-hour impact of using more renewable energy.

The METIS model can be used at national or regional level and it builds on a number of interconnected modules. Technical notes on the different modules and an online documentation of the model variables and indicators can be found under the listed documents at the end of this page.

METIS is used by the European Commission to further support its evidence-based policy making for electricity and gas. It has for example been used to prepare the Commission’s proposals for a new energy market design, as well as renewable energy and energy security issues.

METIS studies

Since 2016, the Commission has conducted a series of METIS studies on sector coupling, electricity, heat and gas.
