Why we are consulting

Results

On the 8th of July 2015, the European Commission launched a consultation on the EU strategy for liquefied natural gas and gas storage. The consultation was open till 30th of September and a high number, over a hundred, responses were received. Responses came from stakeholders covering the whole LNG and storage value chain, from LNG producers to buyers, terminal and underground storage operators therefore providing a representative sample and wide range of expressed opinions. The biggest share of responses came from industry (55%) and associations (27%) but public authorities (11%), NGOs (4%) and citizens (4%) also made their voice heard. While contributions were sent from most Member States, stakeholders from several countries outside the EU have also submitted their views.

On this website, please find the individual submissions of stakeholders.

Objective of the consultation

The Energy Union Communication commits us to developing a comprehensive LNG and storage strategy that will explore the full potential of LNG and gas storage in the mid- to long-term, and to identifying how LNG and gas storage can enhance security and competitiveness of supply in the EU, in particular through diversification of sources, in normal and crisis situations alike. The strategy will look at both the internal EU dimension and international issues.

The objective of this consultation is to ask stakeholders for their views on the challenges and opportunities they see for LNG and gas storage in the EU and how these might boost security of supply, competitiveness and sustainability. We will also seek the views of stakeholders as to where the EU could play a role and which potential actions the EU could envisage in order to achieve these goals.

How to submit your contribution

Corrigendum: please note that the consultation document published on this page on 8 July contained an error in the text about the number of operational LNG terminals in the Iberian peninsula. This has now been corrected.
